The Millennium Alignment

What's Up With May 2000?!

Q: I have a question about how the planets' alignment in May 2000 will possibly effect me.

A: Nearly everyone's heard about the "alignment" of planets that is occurring in May of this year. As it approaches, more and more people are wondering what it might mean for them. People have noticed it because most of the planets will be in Taurus for a few days.

As far as pinning down a date is concerned, it's not easy, because there isn't just one event. On May 3rd, the greatest number of planets will be in Taurus--7 out of 10! But in actual fact, this may not be the "peak". Since peak energies rely on planetary interactions, the crescendoes come when the most important interactions occur, not simply when the planets pile up. Because all of these planets travel at different speeds, they are constantly interchanging partners with the regularity of a country dance. So, as the faster-moving planets overtake and pass the slower moving ones, the energies intensify and relax in a wave-like pattern. There will be several peaks in May.

What will I see in the sky?

With all the hype, we might expect something spectacular to show up in the skies, but because the sun is in their midst, it will drown out the light of the other planets. In fact, the sky will seem empty of any of the planets, since all that are not near the sun are invisible to the naked eye.

Is this really unusual?

While this may seem like a spectacular event, and in some ways it is, it is not terribly unusual. The last time we had seven planets in one spot was in February 1997, and indeed, this type of alignment happens every couple of years or so. If we look for clusters of 6 planets, we find that they occur routinely--generally every year!

The times when we feel the most stress are when the planets are all near the same degree in signs at 90- (square) or 180-degree (opposition) angles to each other, and when these angles involve "volatile" planets. The first ten days of last August was a time of such planetary interactions. You may recall your own sense of heightened awareness as well as a series of high-focus events in the news (the first Turkey earthquake, the shooting in the Jewish daycare center in Los Angeles).

So what can I expect in May?

There's no doubt that May's planets can bring those types of energies out in some people--or in Planet Earth. However, in May we're likely to experience it later in the month than the 3rd. Other peak days, perhaps more momentous, are on May 10th, 13th, 17th, 20th, 25th, and 28th.

What can we do?

However, rather than fear what is to come, I have learned that we must embrace our experience. We will most likely experience just what we have been creating. If we have financial problems, it will be about finances. If our relationships have room for improvement, our issues will come up there. If our job is unsatisfactory, we will notice it more acutely during this time. In other words, what happens now will relate to what we already know.

Generally, we move and change in response to pain. However, that doesn't mean that the effects of this time will be negative. Because there are larger energies--those related to very long-term cycles--in play here, the actions we take will have far-reaching effects. For those of us who are self-aware, we will have been doing our own bit to direct these energies in advance of May. When we do, we are likely to reap great rewards as a result of their influences--not necessarily right away, but for the next 20 or more years.

A Time of Great Potential

So, I prefer to look at this time as one of great potential. Yes, we can fail, and we probably won't get it all perfect (that's why we're here). But we probably will get some important things right, because we will strive to do so. We will make that extra effort to go deeper, to get to the root of our problems so that they don't return. Rather than a time of problems, I see it as a time of solutions. The problems were already there.

If you have planets in the fixed signs--Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius--I don't have to tell you that you've been experiencing "interesting times". But this is actually the tail end of them--and a fresh beginning. For the rest of us, we will notice an effect of lesser urgency, but we still get the fresh start. Also, the more people we are tied to, the more likely we are to notice an influence, because among those people, there are surely some who have planets in fixed signs.

So, is it time for rejoicing or hiding?

I say that it is time to rejoice, just as every day we should. May will present us with life in its fullest degree and perhaps ask us to push the envelope in some way--but it will still be life!
