New to astrology? Read on and ignore the technical bits. There's plenty here for you too! Why don’t I write horoscopes for each sign?

IN EARLY APRIL, I HAD A DREAM. I was working in an office like that of a corporation, but it was a non-profit service organization. I was just starting a contract (not a job) that I would complete in a few months. There was a youngish woman in a stylish business suit sitting at a somewhat cluttered but organized desk, clearly very busy. She had a no-nonsense attitude, but she was not unkind. She clearly expected me to get right to work.

I immediately understood the dream upon waking. The woman at the desk was Saturn in Virgo, and it was time for me to get busy with all the tasks that lay before me in the physical world before my path would be clear to move unfettered into the future. So it is with many of us: A quick informal poll on Facebook elicited a resounding response in the affirmative! We’re clearing out closets and cleaning up messes, physically, metaphorically, mental-emotionally, and spiritually.

Still Getting Our Ducks in a Row
Saturn went back into Virgo as the second act of its “Retrograde 2010” feature film. We can expect this act to last until July 21, when it goes back into Libra. And it’s a good thing we get that long, because there’s plenty to do! However, we can let ourselves off the hook for not getting more done before. What we were doing up to this point is getting clear on the basis for our actions. To act before we have attained clarity is to spin our wheels. Now as clarity emerges, we can act with speed and efficiency. Clarity is emerging because we are . . .

. . . Mending the Split.
If in April we felt split between two worlds, in May the split is healing. But what a healing it is! This split has grown over the years, but the limitations it has been placing on our current life have been in our awareness since around mid-2008. By now we’re seeing the way out — and it surely includes elements of the random and miraculous! It comes with a clash of cymbals and a firework finale, except that it is not just an end but also a new beginning.

What is ending has to do with Saturn: old structures that are no longer useful. What is beginning is coming through the awakening of Uranus, magnified by Jupiter’s expansiveness and joy in life. This has been happening in Virgo (Saturn) and Pisces (Jupiter-Uranus). For those with Virgo and Pisces prominent in their charts (especially late degrees), this is more significant.

Once we become aware of a split in consciousness (as is likely at a planetary opposition), we have the opportunity to heal it. This occurs by letting new feeling awareness fuse into our conscious awareness, principally our mind (which we experience through language). This feeling awareness comes from the core of inner truth that we have within us from the time we become a “separate” consciousness, and which becomes dormant as we are socially conditioned in childhood, but which never dies.

The key is feeling awareness. In modern society, we are taught that the mind must be used to control the feelings, which if allowed to run unabated through our lives (it says) would surely destroy us. Yet, when the mind rules, we end up with a “head-heart” split, because the mind wants to separate itself from what it perceives in order to see it more clearly (“objectively”). While this function has its usefulness, it is not meant to dominate our perceptions.

Universal consciousness is a mostly feeling consciousness. In order to access it, we have to allow our feelings to have an equal place — to let our heart play its (more than) equal role. Once we do this, head and heart become one, and we feel the core of inner truth that we were born with, our link to cosmic harmony (consciousness). The key is to feel what is in your heart. This is the place in our being where all intuition and insight from the invisible world comes.

Saturn-Uranus Is the Key to Our Heart.
This is what is occurring inside us with the Saturn-Uranus opposition, and what wants to be completed in our conscious awareness before the end of these planets’ direct interaction in mid-August. The reward for the inner work required to get to this place is the perfect (and frequently improbable) solution to our dilemma — one that we could never have dreamed up in our mind, because the circumstances are just too fantastic for us to have conjured in the logical mind.

When we can allow the head-heart merge to take place, we become aware of being carried by the Cosmos, through a guidance system that is so strong it feels at times as if it is compulsive. It is then that we see the abundance of the universe (which is our birthright) manifest through a series of “Cosmic gifts” — those situations, people, and experiences which lead us to the perfect path for fulfilling our own unique and natural purpose.

Getting back to Saturn in Virgo, if we have too many structures in our way, from possessions we no longer need to limiting mindsets, we may be partially obstructed in our ability to move into our desired path. Jupiter and Uranus induce us to want to have it all done yesterday and lend speed to our actions.

Even though Saturn is in Virgo for a while, don’t forget that it made it into Libra for November-March already, awakening us to a new relationship focus. This is still in operation, even if it’s less dominant in our thoughts some of the time. The situations which have been developing since then are still in the works, even if we have a take a few steps backward before we can move ahead.

But Wait! There’s More!
This is the really big process of May, but there are plenty of others to choose from, making this one of the most eventful months of the year. With 11 days left in Mercury’s retrograde period left as the month opens, we’re still putting the finishing touches on the lessons we’ve been learning about letting go of ego-driven behaviors. May 17–19, relationships come under the microscope as Venus activates Saturn-Jupiter-Uranus. Tying in to April 26's Saturn-Uranus opposition, Jupiter opposes Saturn on the 23rd to mark the bottom of the 20-year economic and real estate cycle. At the end of the month, a cluster of planetary events keeps us on our toes.

There is a trajectory to events in your life now, that if you can see the story, it will enable you to experience a driving sense of purpose that comes from your center. This will make each crescendo of energy easier to flow through because you see (at least some of) the big picture.

Much Ado About Mercury
By the time May opens, we know full well what Mercury’s retrograde is teaching us. It makes contact with two other planets this time (besides the Sun and Moon), and these characterize the processes we are experiencing. Most significant among these is Mercury’s square to Mars. Still recovering from its retrograde, still slow, still in Leo — Mars reminds us that we are still trying out our wings on what we learned November–March with how we use our energy to interact with others. As we’ve adjusted our boundaries and ways of expressing ourselves, how do we let others know that we’ve changed? How will they take it? During Mercury’s retrograde we find out and make further adjustments.

Because Mercury also trines Pluto, invisible transformative processes help us out. Mercury returns to forward motion on the 11th, with a final square to Mars on June 11, tying into the previous two on April 4 and 25. Other times that tie in with this learning process are April 28 (Full Moon) and May 4 (Sun square Mars), when it may be possible to clear the air about matters that are unresolved.

Relationships Revealed
In the context of the relationship emphasis we get from Saturn, Venus and Mars contacts take on heightened importance. (And since when has love not been important anyway?) On the 7th, Venus and Mars make a harmonious sextile, which presents us with the opportunity to initiate or build on a connection with someone, be they friend, family member, lover/partner, or colleague. Venus and Mars are courtship planets — we like to play when they are engaged in our consciousness, but they can bring deeper accord or commitment as well.

At mid-month, we get a relationship “test” when Venus T-squares Saturn/Jupiter-Uranus. This brings us to look at our relationship(s) in a new way as we discover and begin to fulfill the new path to which Saturn-Jupiter-Uranus are guiding us. This could result in a relationship crossroads if these changes are revealing aspects of our bond that may not work with where we’re headed or who we’ve become. We may feel we need to make a decision about the viability of our commitment(s). Even if we are firm in our relationship, we may find that some adjustments are called for. The key dates are the 15th-17th, but predicaments could arise as early as the 8th-9th.

On the 23rd, Venus brings us to another challenge, which ties into events in November and late January, when Saturn and Pluto were interacting. This challenge comes as Venus opposes Pluto, bringing a broader perspective on the relationship road ahead and how we need to transform it. The transformative processes that we began invisibly, perhaps imperceptibly, as far back as November are emerging now in the visible world.

This is made even more significant by a tie-in with the next eclipse, coming on June 26. This Full Moon-Lunar Eclipse occurs at the degrees of this Venus-Pluto connection, so we get a window on what’s coming at that time, both in our own lives and in the world around us. Events around the 31st also tie into this energy, when Venus reaches the South Node (transiting eclipse point).

Bottom of the Cycle, and More
As mentioned above, when Jupiter opposes Saturn it marks the bottom of the 20-year economic/real estate cycle. This will signal a gradual improvement in the economy. In our own lives, activities we began in 2000 are reaching the fruition stage now. A lot can happen in ten years, and where we are now may have been unimaginable then. This contact also leads us to weigh risk against security in our lives, to evaluate whether we have the balance right. If we feel restricted, we aren’t spreading our wings enough, taking enough risk. If we feel compromised and ungrounded, we may need to move ahead with more patience and care.

This fits in the context of two other planetary cycles, because Uranus is also involved intimately with Jupiter and Saturn. This places more emphasis on creative outcomes and unexpected turns of events, to where it may be hard to notice the Jupiter-Saturn culmination as a separate event.

The End-of-May Groove
A cacophony of planetary events occurs at the end of the month, and it will feel like a familiar pattern, since the same thing has been happening for the past few years. The flagship events of this pattern are the retrograde stations of Chiron and Neptune, but there are other planets piling on this year (as they did last year). This year, Saturn also makes its station before returning to forward motion on the 27th. We usually feel the pressure of added obligations as we attempt to get more done than may be practical, but now we get a few added features: Uranus entering Aries and the Full Moon.

The result is that in the background we’ll feel lots of things shifting in our consciousness, but we may not know what to do with them. Meanwhile, we’ll just know that we’ve got a lot to take care of in the “real” world. Don’t let your to-do list distract you from your inner processes however. Listen within, because you will get clues to what’s coming in the next few months as Neptune and Chiron go through their retrograde periods.

Another Wave of Healing Begins.
I have noted with increasing certainty (with the planets beyond Earth) that the Sun square to each planet marks the beginning of a period of focalizing that planet’s energies that lasts roughly two weeks. This is because that planet is also slowing down to retrograde (or has just turned direct/forward). We experience this with Neptune and Chiron May 19–June 4.

For the past two years, we’ve been working with Neptune and Chiron in tandem, helping us to heal the Great Wound, which in humans is the illusion of separation. This year there is a little daylight between these two planets — just a little as Chiron dips its toe in Pisces. However, they are still acting in unison, dancing together with a paper-thin wall between them. We will continue to work on this lesson in the coming months, each with our own unique story about how the healing is unfolding. Paying attention to what happens during this time will tell us what we’re healing over the coming 5 months that these planets are retrograde. Neptune turns retrograde on May 31, Chiron on June 4.

Not Your Average Full Moon
With all that is happening at the end of the month, the Full Moon on the 27th will be especially potent (as has every Full Moon since the Winter Solstice). While the degrees of the Sun and Moon do not tie directly with the most active planets, the heightened sensitivity that we all have at the time of the Full Moon increases the impact of all the other interactions that are occurring then.

Hail to the Authentic Self! Uranus Enters Aries.
Uranus is the awakener. If you’re not astonished by Uranus when it passes your way, you’re not getting the full benefits of its bounty, because it will always set us on our perfect path if we let it. In Pisces, Uranus has brought us a direct link to the invisible world and taught us much about how it functions. However, its job in Pisces is almost done; it passes into Aries on May 27 to start its seven-year journey through this realm of understanding selfhood. While in Aries, it will be teaching us all the many ways in which we can develop in order to manifest our authentic self (as opposed to the false, ego-self) in daily life.

Aries is renowned as rash, impulsive, and reckless, but this is a misunderstood expression of its energy. It is meant to be the vehicle for expressing pure beingness from our true self. Uranus will show us all the ways in which we are not expressing that authentic self through surprising events. The more we ignore the message, the larger the surprises will be (“shocks” might be more descriptive).

Uranus also brings us Cosmic gifts (as do all of the outer planets) through sudden, miraculous events. Often these events come as a culmination of years of learning where no progress had previously appeared on the surface. We may experience new Cosmic gifts as Uranus enters Aries, especially if we have chart placements in early Aries, Sagittarius, Leo, or Libra.

You’ll start getting a vision of what your soul wants you to experience as Uranus makes its seven-year sojourn through Aries, one that will emerge gradually over the coming weeks. It can be helpful to write down what you inspirations are as they occur to you.

Even before we understand something in the form of language, we have the tools to act on it in our lives. This occurs when we find ourselves doing something without forethought, even in contradiction to what we think we should be doing. This comes from the place of the true self within us, and it is evidence of the power of our feeling consciousness. When we acknowledge and make space for this in our lives, we benefit. This can see us through circumstances where the mind has turned the situation into a dilemma.

May In Depth

May 1-11
We are still absorbing April 28th’s powerful Full Moon as May commences. This has carried the energy of Mercury Retrograde into our consciousness, and until Mercury goes direct on the 11th, this is on the front burner. This is a particular focus on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

Meanwhile, Saturn’s opposition to Uranus (with a Jupiter chaser) on April 26 is carried back to us through the Moon on 2nd and 9th, giving us second and third looks at how we’re doing with the necessary changes in our lives. The Moon supports us with the process on the 4th.

These overlapping energy patterns give us something to work on and something else to ease our path with each day. On and after the 11th, we feel a release as Mercury returns to forward motion. We can re-enter the world of “ordinary” consciousness with extraordinary new understanding to integrate into our lives in the coming 3 months.

May 2nd and 10th are Deep Days, when a contact to Pluto takes us into the depths of the invisible realm where we can see what’s really going on beneath the surface. Fly past the fears and let yourself be filled with inner knowing that is available through this realm — it comes from your true self.

May 7–9
What’s up in your relationships? If you pay attention on these days, you could find out what’s about to unfold in your life on the 16th-19th. The ways you’ve been transforming your life have been affecting your bonds with others almost invisibly; now the new path emerges and becomes part of your life.

May 12–15
Insights abound as the New Moon slips silently into our lives. If we go inside, we’ll find a quiet space where healing can occur. This is especially good for Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.

May 16–19
Some long-awaited changes are unfolding now, focused through relationships, finances, and choices. It is a profound experience, based on situations that have been evolving since Fall 2008. There are enough flowing energies now to allow the changes to flow smoothly, as the Sun harmonizes with the planets that Venus challenges. We’re headed in the right direction, and we should move without hesitation into the flow of the eternal now.

May 20–21 (and through June 23)
The energies change suddenly and substantially, as both Venus and the Sun change signs. Venus in Cancer is softer and more nurturing, while the Sun moving from Taurus to Gemini lightens up and allows life to move a little faster, with more flow. This is not a time to get ahead of yourself however: Soon we’ll be feeling a squeeze as the Sun moves into the spot Venus just finished occupying — the T-square position between Saturn and Jupiter-Uranus. Although this comes in June, don’t over-commit yourself to activities that will later overwhelm you. It doesn’t all have to happen at once.

May 22
The events of the past six weeks related to our long-term balancing of structure and change reach a sort of climax today, the first of several that come in rapid succession through the end of June.

May 23
Today we catch a glimpse of what’s coming in the last half of June, as the Moon and Venus contact Pluto. We can make profound discoveries about why we love who we love, and what we discover and experience now will feed into what unfolds in June. This is a very deep day indeed!

May 24–26
We get a last take on the ways we need to be more flexible in our understanding of others, as well as in forgiving ourselves. We get to see how the ego continues to be an influence in our lives. It helps us to bring humility to our interactions with others, for when we understand how challenging it is to keep our own ego in check, we understand that others face the same dilemmas — we can never judge another’s behavior.

May 27–29

Freedom is the key word today, with the Full Moon in independent Sagittarius and Uranus moving into Aries. Obstacles are easy to move around rather than face squarely at this time. Sometimes that’s all it takes.

May 30–31
The energies of three planets are concentrated, focused as they change direction: Saturn returns to forward motion (is stationary direct) on the 30th after five months of making way for the energies of a new consciousness. Neptune begins its retrograde period on the 31st (stationary retrograde), opening the door to a new lesson about how the inner reality works in our lives. Wounded Healer Chiron participates in this process as well, with its retrograde is on June 4. What wound are you healing?
