june is full of planetary events, some of them quite unusual in the way they combine. however, the news maker (over the next three years) is surely saturn. on the 3rd, it enters cancer for the first time in 29 years. saturn, as with most planets, presents us with a double-edged sword. when it enters a sign, it gives us a new lesson to work with through limitation. on a personal level, it challenges us to take on a task to fulfill something in us at a deeper level. the lesson will have a theme related to the sign and house it is passing through in our chart, and the sustained effort we must make will give us long-lasting, if not permanent, returns for our exertion.
saturn affects us as much, if not more, on the group level, because it rules the constructs and precepts that are placed on us by the culture we live in. it represents the rules imposed on us by the external world. in this broader context, humanity, as it is divided up into cultural, even national, units also learns lessons symbolic of saturn’s sign.
in cancer, saturn is not in its best position. the ancient astrologers recognized that each planet does better in some signs, while doing somewhat worse than average in others. cancer is one of the signs for which saturn is not well-suited, called its detriment. it suggests that saturn cannot fulfill its true nature in this sign without creating difficulties for the “average” individual. however, these astrologers also believed that through effort we could overcome any shortcoming that might befall the average person.
the lesson of saturn in cancer
saturn in cancer, we could say, brings us a lesson of limitation in emotional connectedness. we can also say that it brings us a challenge to create a warmer, fuzzier world for everyone, including those who do not have the privilege of belonging to a supportive group. cancer rules family, tribe, feelings and instincts, the home and homeland, security (especially emotional), and nationalism/patriotism. it also rules the demands placed on the individual by the family, tribe or culture to which it belongs. on the world scene, the lessons are virtually leaping out at us, and it is as if others have been anticipating its ingress, obliging us by creating the limitations through which we can grow.
one of the first things we can associate with saturn in cancer is the limitation of civil liberties that has grown over the past 18 months. “homeland security” is a saturn in cancer buzz-phrase, and the issues of security as well as the re-definition of patriotism and what it means to be free are all matters that will receive scrutiny and hopefully be resolved in this three-year period. other issues that will have to be dealt with include the way that the family is treated by government, as well as women, especially those with children (who are mothers). women may lose rights (as is already happening), and abortion rights could be curtailed, even quashed. although i have defined many of these problems in terms of the phraseology and issues that are evident in u.s. culture, each culture and nation must deal with these issues in their own way. if a culture has its “act” together in this regard, there will be less difficulty during this period. saturn in cancer can bring out political conservatism, and the take-over of the federal court system by the neo-conservative movement could be completed during this time.
saturn in cancer in history
we can see some of the challenges we may face, whether personally or as a world culture, by looking at some of the other times when saturn was in cancer. the times in recent memory that saturn was in cancer were june 1944 – july 1946 and august 1973 – june 1976. the first period saw the end of world war ii, but coming into that time was an oppressive and prejudicial period, with genocide in europe and internment in asia and the u.s. the full extent of the holocaust became known, and the nuremberg trials took place. the problems which existed before the war continued in the form of the cold war, which emerged in this period. this is also when the baby boom began, as a glut of gi’s came home and, fueled by the gi bill, got inexpensive housing.
in 1973–76, another war ended — the war in vietnam. nixon was u.s. president until he resigned (august 1974) as a result of the watergate scandal, which incidentally started with wiretaps prompted by then secretary of state henry kissinger and motivated by efforts to hide the illegal and covert bombing of cambodia during the vietnam war. the first opec oil embargo and subsequent gas shortage increased gasoline prices by about 70% (from 33¢ to 50¢ per gallon). margaret thatcher came into power in the u.k., and the world trade center was completed.
the end to unilateralism?
saturn is more about overcoming wrongs than it is about manifesting an idealistic vision of the future. through it, we identify problems and try to solve them. we suddenly see something in a new light, realize that it isn’t right, and try to fix it. since the beginning of the year, it has been dawning on a growing number of people that certain directions that are being taken by the current u.s. administration are not wise, when carried to their logical conclusion. it is good news that saturn has left gemini and its opposition to pluto behind, because the time for unilateral actions egged on by this pattern is at an ebb.
however, bush is a cancer, and with saturn in his sign, he may become even more autocratic. this may not be a bad thing if it brings the public to recognize that he is a tragically flawed leader in time for the next election.
the rest of the fascinating transits of june
the emphasis that we’ve experienced in the fixed, sustaining signs (taurus, leo, scorpio, or aquarius) during may is waning, although the eclipses promise that their themes will continue. the movement of saturn into cancer establishes new thematic tones, and near the end of june, a number of harmonious trines occur, peaking on the 24th. saturn, the sun, the moon, mars, and uranus all make a pleasant series of contacts that may make life a joy and afford the opportunity for conflicts to be resolved, whether personal or global. children born during this time will have “emotional intelligence” and creative-artistic talent.
what we can do
i am surprised that, in spite of how accurately they identify the problem, people speaking out today say very little about the solutions, as if to voice them is somehow against the law. journalists will offer their opinion freely in observation of an issue, liberally peppering their words with their own slant (or that of their publishers), yet when it comes time to say what we can do about a situation, they avoid the issue. what we can do during saturn in cancer is to sit up, take notice, and stand up for our rights by exercising them. the limitation of the human psyche and suppression of personal expression must not be allowed to stand, no matter where it takes place. most of all, we must not allow our own voices to be curtailed out of fear of retribution. local action can be a theme expressed during this time if we so will it, and this is what is most imminently necessary, no matter what our viewpoint.
wishing you the blessings of the summer’s abundance and vitality!
