night at sunset, if you look to the west, you&#8217;ll see Venus glowing brightly high (for her) in the sky. This is the sign that she is about to begin her 6-week backward (retrograde) sojourn. On December 24, she begins her fall into the west. The ancients were very aware of Venus&#8217;s cycle &#8212; they codified their knowledge in myths and stories, one of the most enchanting of which is that of the Mesopotamian, who wrote the <i>Song of Inanna</i>. For more on Inanna&#8217;s story, see my article, </span><a href="queen of heaven.htm">The Queen of Heaven</a>. Her story is one of loss and recovery, and while we don&#8217;t have to live her story in as dramatic a way as she did, we can benefit if we use the energy of loss and recovery to our advantage.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">She begins her downward fall visually a few days before the retrograde starts, but the retrograde starts on the 24<sup>th</sup>. From the beginning of the month, we can watch for signs of what&#8217;s to come. Admittedly, there&#8217;s so much else going on, we&#8217;re not so likely to notice Venus quietly setting up its scenario on the back of the stage. The theme of its retrograde period will be <i>healing and restructuring</i>. Keep in mind that Venus&#8217;s retrograde asks us to let go of things that we no longer need in order to make room for the new. We may have to give up some things we would rather not lose, because Venus by its nature involves other people &#8212; it&#8217;s a connecting planet.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">This can be especially true of relationships, but it can also apply to objects. If you are planning to get a new living room set, it makes sense that you have to move the old one out in order to create the room for the new one. And there are always things that we want to get rid of, whether physical objects or conditions in our lives. It&#8217;s best to focus the planet&#8217;s energies in the direction we want it to flow, or it may be directed toward things we don&#8217;t want to lose or restructure. Even though our ability to shift the planet&#8217;s direction may be limited (our past actions and circumstances play a major role in establishing what we will experience), by being conscious of the flow in our life, we can shape our experiences and the resulting outcome.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">Venus remains retrograde until February 3<sup>rd</sup>. During that time, you may find yourself contemplating major purchases. This is often a time to plan major expenditures, or to buy things we&#8217;d planned to purchase at the last Venus retrograde (18 months ago, in May-June 04) but haven&#8217;t yet completed. Expect to find unusually good prices during this time as well &#8212; but sometimes a product or service will be unexpectedly overpriced, so buyer beware. In addition, some products you have long been used to buying may stop being produced, or new items become available.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">As for relationships, the Venus retrograde can be a time of profound transformation. All relationships are based on agreements both conscious and unconscious, and Venus&#8217;s retrograde period is the time when these agreements are renegotiated. Every relationship goes through adjustments, often minor and almost imperceptible. However, if a relationship is already out of balance, the underlying issues are likely to come out at this time. Partnerships that are on shaky ground may break up during or soon after this time. A relationship that is firmly based in good communication and mutual respect will grow closer as good agreements are reaffirmed. The weak point of any relationship is its unconscious agreements. A couple agree to marry, but unconsciously she&#8217;s agreeing to take care of her husband-to-be as his mother did if he provides for her financial needs. Later, when she wants independence, it chafes on the relationship because it wasn&#8217;t in the unconscious agreement. The Venus retrograde is when this could come to the surface (and that&#8217;s a good thing).</span></p> <br> <p><span style="color: #000000"><i><span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 14pt">Mars&#8217;s Lessons Are Almost Complete . . .</span></span></i></span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">. . . but will they stick? Perhaps not now &#8212; and there&#8217;s still more to be worked out &#8212; but they will by the time the planets of next year&#8217;s fixed cross configuration have completed their interaction. Our lives may parallel those of more public figures in a symbolic way. If you recall, I said that November would be a month of challenges as Mars connected with many other planets. The hottest dates were supposed to be the 3<sup>rd</sup>, 6<sup>th</sup>, 7<sup>th</sup>, 18<sup>th</sup>, and 22<sup>nd</sup>. As you can see, the dates of the big planetary events are not exactly the same as the dates of the biggest national events. However, they are very close, and the general impression is that there are more significant events occurring now than usual. It isn&#8217;t &#8220;business as usual&#8221;.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">This is the way Mars works when it is retrograde. You can see in most cases where aggressive (Mars-type) action is being curtailed. Torture is hotly debated; aggressive or greedy leaders lose popularity and position; a pull-out from war is considered. These are all good things, and it&#8217;s too bad we don&#8217;t get more time to sort this kind of thing out. It remains to be seen, for them as for us, how well anyone has learned a lesson. That is seen by how well new insights are carried forward and become the basis for action in the coming months and years. Because Mars was involved in such a powerful pattern, it packed more bang for the buck.</span></p> <br> <p><span style="color: #000000"><i><span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 14pt">What Will We Get From Mars?</span></span></i></span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">In our own lives, we can see the same thing. There will be ways in which our own pushes forward have been curtailed, and lessons that we have had the chance to learn. Will we learn the right things? Will we carry these lessons forward into action in the future? We have through the first bit of February to prove ourselves and take advantage of these lessons. Look in particular at events that happened in mid-August, the end of September, and the first week of November (or any of the dates listed above, +2 days). Chances are you&#8217;ll see a pattern or thread that carries a theme that makes sense to you. What are your lessons with that thread? What are you working on? What can you accomplish with it in the next two months? two years?</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">Mars returns to forward motion on the 9<sup>th</sup>, and with that, we get the opportunity to push forward as before. But our awareness is different, and with it comes new opportunities if we don&#8217;t automatically assume that it will be back to business as usual. Events on these dates will feed activities in the coming two years.</span></p> <br> <p><span style="color: #000000"><i><span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 14pt">December&#8217;s Other Stories</span></span></i></span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">Mercury returns to forward motion on the 3<sup>rd</sup>, after a relatively short time retrograde. It packed a little punch, however, because it squared Uranus, bringing out some fiery facts. (This played into some of the big events in November as well.) After the 3<sup>rd</sup>, we can resume our routines without those little snafues that make us laugh (the best approach with Mercury).</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">Incredible to think it could be overlooked, but Pluto is activated by the Sun on the 15<sup>th</sup> and by Mercury on the 31<sup>st</sup>. On the 15<sup>th</sup>, we start a new yearly Pluto cycle, so to use this as a seed-planting time is to use it well. It gives us the opportunity to heal ourselves in profound ways and to make beneficial changes in our circumstances. The ability to make changes to our external life is always dependent upon how whole and centered we are. When we are whole and centered, creative, winning solutions to life&#8217;s daily situations naturally occur to us, and we dare to aim for the highest, brightest star. If we allow the slightest doubt to rule our attitude, that doubt casts a long shadow across our lives, and quite needlessly. Pluto empowers us to be our best and to let our lives emanate from that place of inner knowing.</span></p> <br> <p><span style="color: #000000"><i><span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 14pt">Peculiar Planetary Events</span></span></i></span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">This month, because of the planets&#8217; changes in direction, there are two topsy-turvy situations, where a slower-moving body actually is moving faster and makes the applying aspect to a usually faster-moving body. On the 5<sup>th</sup>, Venus catches up with Mercury; even though she has slowed down considerably by then, Mercury is still slower. Mercury catches back up with her on the 8<sup>th</sup>. This means that they are in harmonious contact with each other on the 4<sup>th</sup>&#8211;8<sup>th</sup> &#8212; a good opportunity time for communication and relationship harmony.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">The second of these upside-down situations is between Venus and Chiron. Chiron normally moves MUCH more slowly than Venus. On the 18<sup>th</sup>, Venus catches up with Chiron and conjoins it, barely inching past. Then on the 22<sup>nd</sup>, while Venus is nearly dead still (from our perspective), Chiron passes her up. This effectively means that Venus and Chiron are in constant contact from the 15<sup>th</sup> through the 31<sup>st</sup>.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">I&#8217;m not sure what these mean, except that the events or circumstances that have been brought to a standstill in our lives may take an unexpected turn during these times. In the first instance, it will be pleasant and perhaps not terribly noticeable. In the second instance, it feeds the theme of the Venus retrograde, but that too is good, because it opens the doors to healing something that needs to be brought back to balance.</span></p> <br> <p><span style="color: #000000"><i><span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 14pt">Chiron Re-Enters Aquarius </span></span></i>. . .</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">. . . on the 5<sup>th</sup>. If you recall, Chiron nipped into Aquarius for a few months earlier this year, then returned to Capricorn to give us one last chance to learn its lessons there. Some of the lesson taught were global &#8212; Katrina, Rita, and the South Asian quake all occurred during that time. Now we get to face new lessons, and the doors are open for Saturn and Chiron to interact once again, which they do frequently next year, continuing the interaction that began in 2004. This is about seeing the truth and rectifying what&#8217;s not in alignment with it. Its themes will revolve around doing good versus doing well, and taking care of others with compassion &#8212; that healing the weakest of us is the only way to create wholeness. Although there are lessons for everyone on a profound level through this dance, in the national scene the time is ripe to heal the rifts in American society and to bring out the truth about the enmeshment of right-wing politics and extreme Christian beliefs &#8212; that they are invasive of others&#8217; lives and seek to impose their ideologies on others for their own selfish benefits. A live and let live approach permits them their freedoms, as it does to others as well. The latest scrap over &#8220;Christmas&#8221; versus &#8220;holiday&#8221; is divisive and revealing of the intentionally inflaming attitude that some have toward others who do not share their belief system. It&#8217;s the latest assault on the separation of Church and State.</span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">Chiron in Aquarius is about healing the group wound. We will see the wound in various groups come out in full color so that it can be healed. The recent rifts in French society as well as American are examples of this.</span></p> <br> <p><span style="color: #000000"><i><span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-size: 14pt">Conflict Within, Conflict Without</span></span></i></span></p> <p><span style="color: #000000">In sitting back to see the pattern in human events this month, I was struck by the truth of the I Ching (Chinese Book of Changes), which tells us that when we are conflicted inside, we create conflict outside. This must be true of G.W. Bush and the Bush Administration as well. The level of their internal conflict is measured by the intensity of fighting around them. This is also evident in Congress at this time, as well as among the American citizenry. When we are at peace internally, it is impossible to create external conflict. By creating greater depths of internal peace, we can contribute to greater peace, joy, and optimism in the world, if only in subtle ways.
